The East Liberty Market Hall is located at the cross section of two very commercial streets. The resulting zone is a triangular site adjacent to several restaurants and upcoming businesses. This project was completed through the use of two major focuses:
Structure: This market hall stands as an iconic point of gathering for the region. Therefore a strong language was adopted. Two steel trussed structures overlap to create a main market arcade along the interior. The extraneous areas create smaller bazaar-like arcades along the sides. Bubbled ETFE membranes make up the insulating tissue. The truss system's connections to the ground and ETFE modules was designed through several iterations to consider issues such as structural integrity, water drainage, light diffusion, temperature control and construction feasibility.
Site Strategy: Seeing as the main corner of the site is the easternmost point, this was chosen as the designated grand entrance. Edges along Penn Circle South were not highlighted as main points of entry as this is mainly a vehicular dominated street. The northern end of this site excited the zone through depressed steps leading to an outdoor courtyard for markets and fairs. The western tip of the triangle houses docking stations accurately designed based on street widths and turning radiuses, along with other back-of-house functions.
